Appellate Division This staff is dedicated to fulfilling the mission of the Caddo Parish District Attorney's Office while providing with excellence the following functions for the Office:
-
The Appeals & Post-Conviction Function
-
The Function of Legal Advisor
-
The Function of Public Records Custodian
-
The Function of Law Library Maintenance
Each assistant and each support staff member in the Appellate Division strives to serve the office in protecting criminal convictions as well as shaping the law through sound legal advice, high quality appeals, responses to post-conviction relief applications and federal habeas corpus writs, as well as arguments and evidentiary hearings. Where necessary, writs of review to higher courts are taken when post-conviction, appellate or federal habeas rulings are believed to be in error.
In addition, the assistants of the Appellate Division respond to queries from members of the Office regarding legal issues that may be encountered during pre-trial preparation or during trial, and may assist in the preparation of emergency writs.
The Appellate Division also functions as the custodian for public records relating to criminal files, and responds to requests to view or obtain copies of such public records, and the Appellate Division Chief reviews each court order for expungment of records.
The Appellate Division Chief supervises the receipt of books for the Office, including reference materials and the physical law library, so that each member of the Office has recent resource materials to facilitate the highest quality job performance, and to assist in accurate invoice review and cost control. Staff members update the physical library whenever such materials are received. The Appellate Division Chief also maintains the passwords for any on-line legal research service used by the Office, ensuring all authorized personnel have access to these resources.
