A Caddo Parish jury deliberated just under three hours before returning a guilty verdict in an armed robbery trial Wednesday, June 27, 2018.

The eight-man, four-woman jury found Michael Dewayne Kelly, 38, guilty of attempted armed robbery for his actions at a welding shop on Pro Street in west Shreveport on December 13, 2016.

During court action that began Tuesday, June 26, the jury heard from the elderly owner of the welding shop where Kelly first asked for work, used the bathroom and then attempted to rob the owner at gunpoint. The jury also heard from a Shreveport Police Department patrol officer who responded and an SPD crime scene investigator.

Kelly’s prior convictions are for simple burglary in 2004 and 2005, illegal possession of stolen things in 2005, and domestic abuse battery in 2009.

He will return to District Judge Roy Bruns’ courtroom July 16 to be sentenced. He faces up to 49-1/2 years at hard labor.

Prosecutors were Assistant District Attorneys Josh Williams and William Gaskins. Kelly was represented by Kurt Goins and Thomas Mayfield.C
