A Texan who pleaded guilty in Caddo District Court earlier this year to a sexual attack on a woman he followed home from a nightclub four years ago was sentenced to almost 40 years in prison Thursday, June 28.
Jesus Martinez, 33, of Houston, was sentenced by District Judge Brady O’Callaghan to 37 years at hard labor for attempted aggravated rape, to be served without the benefit of probation, parole or suspension of sentence.
He also was sentenced to 37 years at hard labor for second-degree kidnapping and to 20 years at hard labor for home invasion. The sentences will be served concurrently.
Martinez pleaded guilty as charged March 20, 2018, after six jurors had been selected. The crimes occurred on July 5, 2014, when Martinez followed his victim home from a downtown Shreveport nightclub, broke into her apartment, bound her and then attempted to rape her. Martinez, who has a 2004 conviction for oral sexual battery, was identified through the use of DNA evidence.
Assistant District Attorneys Kodie K. Smith and Nancy Berger-Schneider prosecuted, while Martinez was defended by Mary Harried.
