A north Caddo Parish man arrested last summer after failing to seek help for his infirm wife pleaded guilty in Caddo District Court last week.

Johnny Wayne Essary, 67, of Mira, was sentenced to 16 months in jail by District Judge John D. Mosely Jr. Wednesday, April 3, 2019, after pleading guilty to cruelty to the infirmed.

Alice Essary, 68 at the time, had not moved from her couch in months, according to Caddo deputies, and as a result had become unresponsive, severely malnourished and suffered from life-threatening wounds and medical issues. Her husband also lived in the house but did not seek medical help or other assistance for his wife.

Essary’s daughter, who lives in Springhill, called 911 after a visit to check on the welfare of her mother. Mrs. Essary was at least 50 pounds underweight and her medical condition was too graphic to describe.

Essary was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Pamela Moser. He was defended by Michelle Andrepont.
